You can't (not) talk about immigration these days...

Everybody's talking about it but nobody's telling the truth...

Possibly the most pernicious bit of bullshit to embed itself in the popular discourse these last few years (and I’ll give you a moment to reflect on how stiff the competition is in that regard) is the idea that “You can’t talk about immigration.”

You’ve heard that from everyone over the last decade or so, haven’t you. “Oh, you can’t talk about immigration these days, nobody’s talking about immigration, they won’t let you talk about immigration, they don’t dare talk about immigration…”

EVERYBODY IS FUCKING TALKING ABOUT IMMIGRATION. Even those people protesting, in the teeth of all evidence and reason, that “you can’t talk about immigration” are, in so doing, talking about immigration.

Newspapers have given over their entire editorial platform to, and indeed whole political parties have been founded for the sole purpose of, talking about immigration.

(Let’s face it, those who obsessively talk about immigration aren’t really incensed by the idea that “you can’t talk about immigration”, nor do they even truly believe it; what annoys them is that some people occasionally talk about things OTHER than immigration.)

There is not, nor has there ever been in my lifetime, any shortage of people ready to talk about immigration nor indeed platforms from which to do so.

The thing that ISN’T happening is people telling the TRUTH about immigration.

The truth that this country is neither held back by, overwhelmed or clogged up with immigrants. This country is HELD TOGETHER by immigrants.
